The idea for my work Pyromania arose once when I was sleeping at my home in a high fever. I woke up to the hooting of sirens, and when I looked down to the street from my 4th floor window, from above I saw the street full of fire-engines. In a bright daylight and while having such a high fever, the red colour on the top of those fire-engines looked to me totally supernatural and I decided to use this colour in my art work. I had the red surfaces painted in the same industrial paintshop where they also paint the fire-engines of my home area, so the colour used in my work is exactly the same as the colour of emergency vehicles. Next to each red surface, I burned a charred wooden beam as a kind of "margin." And because while doing this work there occured a lot of fires set by pyromaniacs in the area where I lived, I named the work as Pyromania. By making many similar versions from the same subject (24 in all = 24 hours in a day), I wanted to imitate the idea of this strange compulsive repetition in a diary kind of way. Pyromania was exhibited in the exhibition "Heartbreak Hotel" which was arranged by Pori Art Museum in 1998 in the former Hotel Otava, Pori, and in my solo exhibition in Oulu Art Museum (1997). In 2002 it was presented in Viitasaari, in the countryside in Central Finland. (c)Timo Heino | ||||||||||||
